Narasingam, located near Othakadai, 8 km north-east of Madurai, houses the 5000+ years old Yoga Narasimha Perumal temple. Also known as Gajagiri kshetram, the rock-cut temple is located at the foot of Yanaimalai hill.
The current temple structure is built around 770 CE by Marankaari, during the reign of Parantaka Nedunjadaiyan.
The 6 feet sculpture of Narasinga Perumal is carved out of the hill itself, demonstrating ancient cave sculpturing skills.
Chakra thirtham or Padma thadagam (Lotus pond) in front of the temple is so charming and said to have been referred to in Brahmanda Purana.
The elephant shaped mountain behind and an enchanting lotus pond in the front adds natural aura and beauty to this serene temple!
