Sun temple at Modhera, Gujarat, located 99 Km north-west of Ahmedabad is a 11th century marvel, built in 1026 AD by Chaulukyas.
Heavily ornamented with intricate carvings inside and outside, this Archaeological Survey preserved complex wows us with clarity, symmetry and detail.
The Kunda (tank) in front of the temple has flights of steps from all 4 sides to access water.
The temple built on 23.3° latitude (exactly on Tropic of Cancer!) is designed in such a way that the first rays of rising sun lits up the deity of Surya in the Garbha griha during solar equinox day (20 March). On summer solstice day (21 June), the sun shines directly above the temple at noon casting no shadow anywhere!
An amazing artistic, architectural and engineering master piece!
