Amruthapura, located 48 km south-east of Shivamogga and 65 km north of Chikmagaluru, Karnataka, houses the astonishing Amrutheshwara temple.
Built in the year 1196 CE by Amrutheshwara Dandanayaka during the reign of Veera Ballala II, it is here one of the most famous sculptors Ruvari Mallitamma started his artistic career.
The hoysala temple built in ekakuta design is highly ornate, replete with intricate carvings and sculptures. Rows of shining, lathe turned black basalt pillars in the main mantapa (hall) are awe-inspiring!
The outer parapet wall has more than 140 panel sculptures with depictions from epics.
Sheer excellence! What a work of art!
