Alappuzha

Alappuzha, a coastal district in Kerala is a paradise of land intercepted by lagoons, rivers and canals – flanked by 2,000+ square kilometres Vembanad Lake, to which 6 major central Kerala rivers drain-in to.

The key attraction is Kuttanad, the rice bowl of Kerala, noted for its paddy fields below the sea level – ranging from 2 to 6 feet below MSL!

4 major rivers viz. Pampa, Meenachil, Achankovil and Manimala that flow into the region complemented by numerous canals, connected lakes and waterways make this region one of its kind. The best way to explore Kuttanad is through water!

Alappuzha is said to have had trade relations with ancient Greece and Rome in the Middle Ages. The port was active during 18th century itself though the light house was established only by 1862. The light house with teak spiral staircase is in great shape and worth a visit.

Ravi Karunakaran Museum, Coir museum, Marari beach, Alappuzha beach are the attractions that one could explore.
