Rajahmundry - Dowleswaram Barrage

Rajahmundry – Dowleswaram

The Dowleswaram Barrage is located 15 km south of Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh.

This vital irrigation structure on the river Godavari, originally built in 1852 by Sir Arthur Cotton, was renovated in 1970. It’s also called Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage or Godavari Barrage.

The Godavari River splits in to two after the barrage – the Gautami Godavari flowing to the left to join Bay of Bengal near Yanam, and Vasishta Godavari flowing to the right joining Bay of Bengal at Antarvedi.

The right and left bank canals from the barrage are used for irrigating large tracts of agricultural lands.

Arthur Cotton Museum is nearby.
