Napier Museum is located in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.
Established in 1857 by Uthram Thirunal Maharaja, it’s one of the first museums in India. The current building was built by Ayilyam Thirunal Maharaja in 1880. The museum is named after Lord Napier, the former Governor General of Madras.
The museum has a good collection of Art, cultural and antique objects on display – comprising of sculptures, carvings, textiles, handicraft, musical instruments, and a treasure of Coins – from Satavahana (100 BCE – 249 CE), Chera, Chola, Pandya, Vijayanagara times, and from Roman, Dutch, Persian, Chinese, Turkey eras.
Also on display is the sword of Velu Thampi Dhalawa (1809), one of the first martyr of Indian freedom struggle.
