Nagarjunasagar Dam on Krishna river is located at the border between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, 156 km south-east of Hyderabad.
Constructed between 1955 and 1967, the dam created a mammoth water body of 285 sq km, with a storage of 11.47 billion cubic metres!
The multi-purpose Dam serves irrigation, drinking water and hydro-power. It caters to almost 50% drinking water requirement of Hyderabad city. It helps irrigate more than 2.5 million acres of agricultural lands and has installed capacity to generate more than 800 MW of electricity.
The construction of the dam submerged an ancient Buddhist settlement, Nagarjunakonda, which was the capital of the Ikshvaku dynasty in the 3rd century CE. Excavations yielded 30 Buddhist monasteries, artwork and inscriptions of historical importance, which have been relocated to a higher place, now an island in the middle of the reservoir.
