Saavira Kambada (1000 pillar) temple, Moodbidri, Karnataka, is located 35 Km north-east of Mangalore.
The temple is also known as Chandranatha Temple as it houses the 8-feet idol of Theerthankara Chandraprabha. The Basadi was built by the local chieftain Devaraya Wodeyar in 1430 CE.
Pillars built in Vijayanagara style are elaborate and no two pillars are alike. Carvings that carry depictions of African giraffes and Chinese characters point to the prosperous inter-continental trade of those times.
The name Moodbidri (mooda – east and bidri – bamboo) has its origins after the abundant bamboo forests in the area.
A calm and serene place!
