Cheluvanarayana Swamy Temple at Melukote is located 55 km north of Mysore and 137 km south-west of Bengaluru, Karnataka.
Sri Ramanujacharya (1017 – 1137 CE) came to Melukote and stayed for over 12 years. The current structure was built / renovated by Vijayanagara kings and Wodeyars of Mysore during 15th / 16th century CE.
The temple is ancient – During Kritayuga Lord Dattatreya is said to have come here (Vedadri). During Tretayuga Lord Ram along with sons Lava and Kusha are said to have visited this temple.
The architecture, sculpturing and stone carvings are amazing! An interesting aspect is that a murti of the Delhi princess Bibi Nachiyar is kept inside Garbha griha along with the main deity.
The temple premises houses the oldest Sanskrit Pathshala (school) in India that dates to 1853 CE.
