Meenakshi Sundareshwarar Temple is located in Madurai, Tamilnadu.
Built by King Kulasekara Pandya during 1200 CE and following Pandya kings, the temple underwent massive destruction and plundering in the hands of invaders during 14th century CE. Vijayanagara kings started the rebuilding efforts, and the temple complex was further expanded and fortified by the Nayak rulers of Madurai.
The temple complex has 14 Gopurams (gateway towers) – the tallest being the Southern Gopura at 52 metres (173ft), and the oldest being the Eastern one.
The main Mantapas (halls) of the temple include Ayiram kal (1000-pillared hall), Kilikoondu-mandapam, Golu-mandapam and Pudu-mandapam.
Madurai is ancient, referred to in texts right from 1st century CE.
