Lothal

Lothal

Lothal – located 76 km south-west of Ahmedabad – is one of the southernmost cities of the ancient Indus valley civilization, first inhabited around 3700 BCE (Yes, a good 5700 years ago!).

Discovered in 1954, Lothal was excavated by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). The key structures excavated include a marketplace, citadel, residential areas, warehouse, dockyard, workshops and town square.

Lothal had World’s earliest known port that connected the city to Arabian sea through an ancient course of Sabarmati river. The dockyard is a great work of maritime architecture equipped to berth and service ocean-going vessels.

Lothal was a market place for beads, gems and ornaments that flourished until 1900 BCE, with products reaching far flung corners of west Asia and Africa.

Archaeological Museum adjacent to the excavated areas has collections of Indus-era antiquities on display.

Lothal – what a slice of antiquity!
