Sri Mahamaya temple, Kuknoor, Karnataka is located 27 Km north-west of Koppal.
The current structure is built around 12th century CE.
Mahamaya Temple is referred to in Mahabharata, suggesting there exists a Kali temple beneath the current day structure.
Interestingly the 3 main deities – Lakshmi, Parvathi and Harihara – face south. This is rare. The Maha mantapa has moderate carving / sculpturing.
The fort-like structure of the temple indicates it was being used for multiple strategic purposes in the past.
