Varkala Janardhana Swamy Temple is located 40 km north-west of Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.
The temple is a fine example of Kerala art and architecture – with a circular Garbhagriha and square mandapas, with beautiful wooden carvings. This ancient temple was renovated during the reign of Umayamma Rani (1677-1684 CE).
As per Bhagavatham, Balarama is said to have visited this place (~ 5200 years ago) on his pilgrimage en route to Kanyakumari.
Located close to the Varkala beach, the temple has a large Pushkarini (temple pond).
