Thirunelli Maha Vishnu Temple, Kerala is located 25 km north of Mananthavady and 16 km south-west of Tholpetty, along the Karnataka border.
Located at an elevation of about 900 meters (3,000 feet) above MSL, the temple is located amidst forests.
The current format of the Temple is believed to have been set up during the reign of Chera king Kulasekhara Perumal (767 CE to 834 CE).
Thirunelli temple, said to have been established by Brahma, is ancient, and finds its mention in Puranas, such as Matsya Purana, Skanda Purana, and Padma Purana.
The copper inscriptions found here dates back to 999 CE and 1008 CE; and coins of 9th and 10th centuries got excavated from the vicinity while laying the roads.
Papanasini stream located a km north-west of the Temple is known for performing rituals for the departed.
The stone aqueduct established centuries back to bring water from Papanasini for use at the Temple is still intact.
