Pillayarpatti Karpaga Vinayagar (Ganesha) Temple is located 14 km north-west of Karaikudi, Tamilnadu.
It’s one of the oldest Rock-cut Cave Temples of Tamilnadu established in 650 CE. Significant expansions and renovations were carried out by Pandyas and Nagarathars.
The temple walls and mandapams have stone inscriptions from 11th century CE. In late 19th-century during restoration work a few panchaloha (amalgam of 5 metals) statues were discovered dating to 11th century CE.
The temple complex has several mandapams with decorated pillars and ceilings.
