Agraharams of Palakkad, Kerala – Agraharams are a peculiar arrangement of row houses on either side of the road with a temple at one end. The Agraharams in Palakkad had been established many centuries ago by people migrating from Thanjavur and Tirunelveli areas in Tamilnadu.
There are 18 Agraharams in Palakkad town area; a few of them are located in and around Kalpathy in the northern part of the town. Kalpathy is said to have been established around the year 1425 CE.
Kalpathy is surrounded by Agraharams such as:
- Old Kalpathy
- New Kalpathy
- 12th street
- Kalchetti theruvu
- Lakshminarayana puram
Temple festivals, practices, celebrations and fervour across these Agraharams are quite similar.
Kalpathy river, a tributary of Bharathapuzha, has been central to this culture and has remained a vital part of these settlements
over the years.
Kalpathy and surrounding areas – truly a heritage treasure!
