Hampi - Virupaksha Temple

Hampi – Virupaksha

Virupaksha temple, Hampi, is one of the oldest functioning temples in the country – functioning uninterruptedly since 7th century CE!

It was expanded and enhanced during the reign of King Deva Raya II (early 15th Century CE) and Krishna Deva Raya (early 16th century CE).

The sprawling temple complex has large Garbha griha, many sub shrines, pillared mantapas, Gopuras, gateways, Pushkarani (temple tank), water management systems (including aqueducts, underground channels), kitchen…

The East facing Gopura (tower) is 160 feet tall and 9-tiered. It was added in 1510 CE by Krishna Devaraya alongwith the 100-pillared Ranga mantapa.

The temple somehow survived destruction.

The north tower, called Kanakagiri Gopura, leads to the Pushkarani (temple tank) and Thungabhadra river.
