Bhima’s gate in Hampi, Karnataka, is located 5 km south-east of Hampi Bazar.
Bhima’s gate was one of the complex gateways that existed in the fortified Vijayanagara (1336 – 1565 CE). The structure was one of the many gateways that allowed one to enter the walled city in those times.
Inside walls carry a carving depicting Bhima (Mahabharatha) holding the Saugandhika flower. The fortification was called Bhima’s gate possibly due to the fact that Bhima was the strongest among Pandava brothers and this gate was considered to be one of the strongest gateways of the Vijayanagara Empire.
The structure has been designed in such a complex manner so as to create blind spots for the invading army.
