Forgotten World Highway – State Highway No SH 43 in North Island, New Zealand – is a remote and mysterious route that is 148 Kms long, connecting Taumarunui and Stratford.
It contains the only unsealed portion (12 Kms through Tarangakau Gorge) of the New Zealand state highway network.
The drive may take up to 3 hours as it passes through rugged countryside over three saddles – Strathmore, Whangamomona and Tahora. 14 km from Whangamomona is the Moki tunnel also known as Hobbit’s hole, a 180 metre one-way tunnel built in 1935.
Mount Damper Falls, an 85 meter tumble is a not-to-miss attraction located on a 14 Km detour near Moki tunnel on the highway.
The drive takes us through beautiful wilderness, grasslands, pristine waters, streams, valleys, saddles, farm lands, forests and spectacular landscapes.
Forgotten World Highway drive is highly memorable one; worth doing in a lifetime!
