Bekal Fort – located 16 km south of Kasargod, Kerala – is the largest fort in Kerala spread over 40 acres. It’s one of the most scenic forts in India.
Though the recorded history of Bekal goes well before 12th Century, the fort is believed to have been constructed / significantly modified by Shivappa Nayaka of Keladi (Ikkeri, Karnataka) around 1650 CE.
The fort is built using laterite slabs in a polygonal shape. Built mainly for defence needs, the fort is strategically designed and placed, providing an imposing view all around.
Bekal fort is mesmerising!

Hi PK Narayanan,
I have been following your blog for quite some time. The pictures that you post are amazing. I’m planning to visit Bekal Fort after 2 weeks with my family. Can you please suggest a good vegetarian hotel nearby?
Thank you!
Have a nice trip to Bekal. We may have to enquire locally / check for veg hotels, as am not sure of any…
