Ashtamudi Lake (Ashtamudi Kayal) is located in Kollam, Kerala.
The octopus-shaped water body is a unique wetland ecosystem with a surface area of 62 square kms. Ibn Batuta had chronicled about the lake and the Kollam port in 14th century CE.
Kallada River, which originates from Ponmudi in western ghats, discharges itself into the Ashtamudi Lake with an annual run-off of over 76 cubic kms of fresh water.
Ashtamudi lake has a few islands in it. The lake is an interesting natural formation that has high ecological and economic significance.
