Backwaters of Alappuzha, Kerala, consists of the Vembanad lake, Punnamada lake, a few rivers draining in to these lakes, and a large network of canals connecting them in the Kuttanad and Kumarakom region.
Vembanad is one of the largest lakes in India, which is 97 km long and 14 km wide at its widest point. The lake surrounds a few islands including Pathiramanal and Perumbalam.
The Kuttanad region is the lowest lying land in India; and is one of the rare places in the world where farming is done in lands that are 1.2 to 3.0 metres (4 to 10 ft) below sea level.
Vembanad Lake and Punnamada lake are at the heart of Backwaters tourism, with numerous kettuvallams (houseboats) and row-boats plying it.
Vembanad Wetland system hosts many migratory birds, and carries more than 100 birds as natives! The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is located on the east coast of the lake.
