Tehri Dam, Uttarakhand, is the highest dam in India and one of the highest in the world. Located at 5800 feet above mean sea level, this rock and earth-fill embankment dam is built on river Bhagirathi.
The 855 ft tall dam is 575 metres long. The crest (dam wall) at the top is 20 metres wide and at the base a mammoth 1,128 metres; yes, more than a km! The dam creates water storage of 4.0 cubic kilometres with the surface area of 52 square km!
The installed hydro-electric capacity is 1,000 MW along with an additional 1,000 MW of pumped storage capacity being created. The downstream Koteswar dam has 400 MW capacity. The Dam provides irrigation to more than 2 million acres and drinking water to many areas, including Delhi.
Re-location of 100,000+ people and environmental concerns delayed the dam construction that began in 1978 and took long years to complete in 2006.
