Jantar Mantar or Vedh Shala is located 2.5 km south of Mahakaleshwar Mandir, Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh.
Built by Maharaja Jai Singh II in 1719, the observatory consists of 13 architectural astronomy instruments. It’s the 1st of 5 observatories built by Maharaja Jai Singh II.
Some of the key yantras here include Shanku Yantra, Digyansha Yantra, Samrat Yantra, Nadi Walaya Yantra, Bhitti Yantra and Vaidik ghadi.
Ujjain was the zero meridian for time prior to Greenwich; and great astronomy works such as Surya Siddhanta and Panch Siddhanta were written here.
