Rameshwaram, Tamilnadu is a tranquil location that weaves together the history, geography, heritage and natural beauty!
Home to the ancient Ramanathaswamy (Shiva) Temple, said to have been consecrated by Sri Rama in Thretha yuga, Rameshwaram island is connected to the mainland by Pamban Bridge.
Rameswaram was connected to Sri Lanka through Rama Sethu, built during Sri Rama’s time. It was operational until 1480 CE, when parts of the Sethu were submerged in the ocean due to a cyclone.
The temple is ancient. It was renovated and expanded during 11th and 12th century CE by the Pandya Kings and Srilanka Kings such as Parakrama Bahu, Nissanka Malla, Jeyaveera Cinkaiariyan and Gunaveera Cinkaiariyan, and later by Vijayanagara Kings in 16th century CE, and by Sethupathy kings during 17th century CE.
The outer praakara mandapams (corridors) of the Temple is said to be the longest in the world – with 120 meters each on east and west, and 195 meters each on south and north – with 7 meters in height and 1212 stone pillars adorning the corridor.
The Temple is replete with ornamented, tall pillars, intricate stone carvings, and breath-taking sculpturing!
There are 64 Tīrthas (holy water bodies) in and around Rameshwaram, of which 22 are within the Temple.
