Virupaksha temple, Mulbagal, Karnataka, is located 34 km east of Kolar. It was built in 14th century CE by Vijayanagara rulers.
The temple interestingly has 2 Shivlingas in Garbhagriha – Virupaskha linga, installed by sage Atri in puranic times, and the Atma linga – one in front of the other.
Walls have inscriptions dating from 1481 CE.
The temple is elaborate with carvings and extensive stone work. Another attraction here is the Bagulamukhi Devi temple, said to have been established by King Vikramaaditya.
The stepwell and Kalyana mandapa are in a reasonably good shape, though the whole temple complex and the fort around wears a neglected look.
