Kundrakudi - Shanmughanathar Temple

Kundrakudi

Kundrakudi, situated 12 km north-west of Karaikudi, Tamilnadu, houses the famous Shanmughanathar Temple.

The temple is located atop the hillock called Mayil Malai, and can be reached by a flight of 150+ steps.

There are 3 ancient rock-cut cave temples at the ground level on the western side of the rocky hill, maintained by Archaeological Survey of India(ASI). These cave temples are said to have been renovated by Pandya rulers during 8th century CE.

The cave temples are dedicated to Shiva, yet there are full size sculptures of Vishnu, Durga, lingotbhava and Harihara, painted colourfully with vegetable dyes!
