Chamundi Hills located 13 km south-east of Mysuru (Mysore), Karnataka, houses the Chamundeshwari temple at an elevation of 3,300 feet above MSL.
The shrine is built around 12th century CE by Hoysala rulers whereas the Gopura (tower) is said to have been built by the Vijayanagara rulers during 17th century CE. The flight of 1000+ stone steps to the top was built by Wodeyar kings around 1659 CE.
The nandi (Bull) statue situated nearby is 16 feet tall and 25 feet long.
According to the legend, Mahishasura was killed by goddess Chamundeswari here and Mahishooru (meaning the place of Mahishasura) is known today as Mysuru.
