Varaha Cave Mandapam, Mamallapuram, Tamilnadu, is located 1 km west of Shore Temple.
It’s an exquisite rock-cut masterpiece in Mamallapuram created during the mid-7th century during the times of Pallava King Narasimhavarman I (Mamalla).
It features a grand front porch supported by four slender pillars with magnificent seated-lion bases. The temple is celebrated for its four monumental bas-relief panels, each depicting Vedic legends with incredible anatomical precision and emotional depth.
While the Pallavas were the original architects, the site was later protected, maintained and revered by the Chola kings (9-12th century CE) and Vijayanagara Rulers (14-16th century CE).
Today it remains as one of the oldest, well-preserved and exquisite piece of history, offering a serene glimpse into ancient Indian architectural and artistic prowess!
Mamallapuram is now known as Mahabalipuram.
