Trimurti Cave, Mamallapuram, Tamilnadu, is located 1 km west of Shore Temple.
The sophisticated rock-cut Cave Temple dating back to early 8th century CE was commissioned during the reign of the Pallava King Rajasimha (Narasimhavarman II).
The Temple is architecturally unique for its lack of a front pillared porch (mandapam), making the three Garbha griha cells to open directly onto the rock face – each of them dedicated to the trinity – Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva.
The site was later protected by the Vijayanagara rulers (14-16th century CE) and is now part of the UNESCO World Heritage group of monuments.
Mamallapuram is now known as Mahabalipuram.
