Varadaraja Perumal Temple, Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, was built in 1053 CE by the Chola kings. It was later expanded and renovated by Vijayanagara Kings.
This masterpiece of Dravidian architecture features 32 shrines, 19 vimanams, and countless mandapams with highly ornamented pillars, ceilings and walls.
The Temple is replete with intricate carvings and exquisite sculpturing, including the extraordinary stone chain carved from a single granite block. and the lizards on the ceiling.
Being one of the 108 Divya Desams, this is also the place where Sri Ramanuja once resided.
A mystical tradition here involves bringing out Athi Varadar idol made of fig wood, which is kept submerged in the Anantha Sarovaram tank, once every 40 years.
