Kanchi Kamakshi Amman Temple, Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu stands as the spiritual heart of Kanchipuram.
Revered as one of the 51 Shakti Peetams, its origins are steeped in ancient Sangam literature. The stone structure was established by the Pallavas around 7th century CE. Over the centuries, the Temple was significantly expanded, developed and renovated by Cholas (10th to 12th century CE), Vijayanagara kings (15th / 16th century CE), and Nayaka rulers.
A pivotal historical moment occurred in the 8th century CE when the Adi Shankaracharya established the Sri Chakra within the Garbhagriha.
Architecturally, the temple is a masterpiece of Dravidian design and architecture – featuring embellished Gopurams, Mantapams, meticulous interlocking stone joineries, and pillars with intricate stone carvings and sculpturing.
