Gomateswara statue, Gommata Betta – located in Karkala, 53 Kms north-east of Mangaluru, Karnataka, is the 2nd tallest Bahubali statue in Karanataka (after Shravanabelagola).
Installed in 1432 CE by King Veera Pandya on the rocky Gommata hill, the statue is 42 feet tall, mounted on top of a 5 feet platform.
Veera Pandya also installed the Brahmadeva manasthamba pillar in front of the statue in 1436 CE. Statues of different Jain Tirthankaras in black marble are installed behind the Bahubali.
The climb-up is moderate with 212 steps carved out of the rocky hill, offering lovely views of the surrounding areas.
