Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, Srirangam, Tamilnadu, is located 11 km north of Tiruchirappalli.
The Temple is ancient – with the deity being mentioned in Ramayana, Mahabharata, Padma Purana, Brahmanda Purana, and Garuda Purana. Considered the foremost amongst the 108 divya desams, Srirangam finds mention in Sangam era (300 BCE to 300 CE) literature too.
Temple complex is a repository of ancient inscriptions numbering more than 640, dating between 7th and 17th centuries, in 6 languages – Tamil, Sanskrit, Kannada, Telugu, Marathi and Odia.
The Temple was built in stages right from the early Chola period (600 BCE). Later the expansion and renovation happened during the reigns of Cholas, Pandyas, Hoysalas, Marathas and Vijayanagara Kings.
The Srirangam Temple with 7 Praakarams is the largest functional Temple in the world with an area of over 155 Acres – housing 81 shrines, 21 towers, 39 pavilions, mandapams, granaries, and 12 major water tanks.
Srirangam is an island in River Kaveri. Sri Ranganathaswamy is in reclining position (Shayana kolam) here, facing the South. The Temple complex is replete with Gopurams, tall mandapams, corridors, decorated pillars, exquisite carvings and sculpturing – all in granite.
