The Sydney Harbour Bridge, Sydney, NSW Australia is one of the most recognisable landmarks of the city.
Built in 1932, it’s one of the largest steel arch bridges in the world. Nick-named the Coat-hanger, one can walk and cycle across the bridge, alongside 8 lanes of motor-traffic, and 2 metro rail tracks.
One could also climb the bridge to its peak, that provides incredible views all around.
The bridge is made of 59,000 tonnes of steel (most of it imported from England) and 6 million hand-driven rivets – with the largest rivet weighing 3.5 kg and 40 cm long.
There are pylons at both the ends – one of them houses the museum and tourist centre.
The arch bridge spans 503 metres in length, with 48 metres (160 ft) width. A coat of painting requires 30,000 litres of paint.
