Hampi – Mahanavami Dibba

The Navaratri Mahanavami Dibba is located in the Royal Enclosure, Hampi, Karnataka.

The tall platform was being used during Vijayanagara times for viewing army march-pasts, games, aquatic sports, musical performances and the like – also for the most important Navaratri (Dasara) celebrations and processions. The tall platform has decorative carvings on all sides – comprising of elephants, horses, visitors from the west and Persia, merchants, soldiers, images of common lifestyle and stately processions.

The Dibba raises to a height of 12 meters in a 3 tier system, with multiple stairways to go up. It’s massive in size with ~ 300 square meters of area at the top!

Sri Krishnadevaraya (1509-1529) constructed this in commemoration of the victory over Udayagiri (now in Orissa).
