Chidambaram is a temple town famous for Nataraja Temple (Thillai temple), situated 65 km south of Pondicherry.
The current temple was built in 10th century CE when Chidambaram was the capital of the Chola dynasty. The temple existed here in ancient times with indications pointing back before 1500 BCE.
The complex spread over 40 acres has 9 gopurams, a number of mantapas (halls), long praakarams and several water storage facilities, including the Shivaganga tank.
A heap of inscriptions are found here from 10th century CE through to 16th century CE. According to inscriptions the temple was recipient of a precious jewel from the king of Angkor, who built the Angkor Wat through Chola king Kulothunga.
The stone works are enormous, elaborate and highly ornate.
