Krishna’s Butterball, Mamallapuram, Tamil Nadu, is located 1 km west of Shore Temple.
The massive, gravity-defying granite boulder has been captivating travellers for over 1,200 years. Known locally as Vaan Irai Kal (Stone of the Sky God), this 250-ton natural wonder stands more than 6 metres high and sits precariously on a 45-degree slope.Interestingly there have been failed attempts to move it: first by the Pallava King Narasimhavarman I in the 7th century CE, and later in 1908 by Arthur Havelock, Governor of Madras, who used seven elephants in a futile attempt to dislodge it for safety reasons.
The boulder’s unique balance even inspired the Raja Raja Chola (10th century CE) to create the famous never-falling Thanjavur Bommai mud dolls.
Mamallapuram is now known as Mahabalipuram.
