Somnath Shiva Temple is located in Prabhas Patan, Veraval, Gujarat, on the Sea-coast.
Somnath is an ancient Temple and happens to be the first Jyotirlinga Temple (among the twelve).
The temple was reconstructed several times in the last 1000 years after repeated destruction by multiple invaders, starting from 1026.
The current structure was built in 1951.
Veraval port was one of the prominent trading ports in Gujarat. The 11th century Persian traveller Al-Biruni describes Somnath and Veraval as important places having flourishing trade with Persia, east Africa and China.
Prabhasa Tirtha finds mention in many Puranas and ancient texts including Mahabharata. Sri Krishna left his body here.
