Yana Rocks – a strange, unique rock formation amidst the dense forests of western ghats – are located 40 km west of Sirsi, and 28 km north-east of Kumta, Karnataka. It’s one of its kind.
The approach from Sirsi involves half-a-km (easy) hike to the 2 rocks named Bhairaveshwara shikhara and Mohini shikhara. The formations composed of solid black crystalline karst limestone are 120 metres and 90 metres in height respectively.
The pradakshina (circumambulation) way around the cave temple takes us through a larger cave-like formation that’s really tall, wide and breath-taking!
Legend has it that Bhasmasura was tricked to place his hand over his own head and became bhasma (ashes) here.
The two rock formations are surrounded by thick forests, streams, and foliage. It’s surprising how these mammoth formations have appeared as if from nowhere, rising sharply above the surrounding green area!
Yana rocks rock!
