Muktheeswarar Temple, Madurai, Tamil Nadu, is located 4 km south-east of Meenakshi Amman Temple.
This ancient Temple is part of Madurai’s Pancha Bhuta Sthalams representing Vayu (air).
The current structure of the Temple was built in 17th century CE by Nayaks, though the Temple is ancient.
Distinctive sculptural features include Eka Paada Trimurti – a single-legged form combining Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva – and panels associated with Shiva’s Thiruvilayadal.
Its setting beside Vandiyur Teppakulam (Temple Tank) adds a quiet, elemental charm to Temple.
A unique cosmic phenomenon occurs here twice a year – in March and September – when the sun’s rays illuminate the main deity.
