Dholavira Indus Valley Civilization Archaeological Site is located in Kutch, Gujarat, 59 km east of Khavda.
The 120 acre quadrangular city lay between two seasonal streams – the Mansar in the north and Manhar in the south. The site was occupied and operational in stages, from the year 3500 BCE to 1500 BCE.
Urban planning, architecture and sophisticated water management systems indicate an advanced civilisation existed here. Excavations have unearthed Bead processing workshops, artefacts and vessels of various kinds made of copper, shell, stones, semi-precious stones, terracotta, gold, ivory and other materials.
The city consisted of 3 distinct parts – fortified citadel, middle town, and lower town, all inter-connected, with their own defence systems, gateways, built-up areas, streets, wells, water management systems, and open spaces.
One of the unique features of Dholavira is its sophisticated water conservation system – consisting of channels and reservoirs, the earliest found anywhere in the world. The city had massive reservoirs 3 of which have been excavated. Dholavira is said to have 16 or more reservoirs of varying sizes.
Excavations so far indicate evidence of inter-regional trade with other Harappan cities, as well as with cities in the Mesopotamia region and the Oman peninsula.
